The Studienkonto scheme

The Studienkonto (Higher Education Account) scheme has existed in Nordrhein-Westfalen since the summer semester of 2004. It means that students can now only study for a certain number of semesters without paying tuition fees, and that they must pay fees for an additional or further degree. Students get an account credited with a certain number of free semesters. After each semester part of this credit is deducted.
